Creative Studies Grand Assignment (The Last Articles)

Just finish up my final exam. Before I shut down this blog, I like to share my last assignment for this trimester. BTW, this blog is publish just for this subject for our coursework. I forgot to mention it in my first post. Therefore, after this articles, there will be any post…

It’s about 2 month I learn about creative. The best thing is, our assignment. According to my supervisor, Mr Radzi, we didnt show any creativity in our presentation.  So, we will never get full mark for this assignment. After put a lot of effort for this assignment, we manage to complete it and attract our audience. Thank god..thank to our group leader, and thanks to our group member for silly idea. We made it!!!

To me, its not a big deal if we did not get full marks.  At least we learn so much how to become creative. Thanks to Mr Radzi and Mr Halim for teaching this subject. Now, we start to think different from others. We start to think how process is done. What is design concept anything around us. What would it be if we change a function of anything around us to something else?

There is no boundary in literal thinking. There only a guts to make something that we think happen, and in future, all our imagination will become true. Its all about thinking outside from box. Creativity is not a talent. It is something that your practice. Anything and everyone is creative. There is no such things as “I’m not creative”. What comes up from your mind and if we try hard, that thing will become true.

For the last assignment, we combine all thing that we learn from 1st chapter to chapter 6th.

Topic for our assignment is Creative in MMU. First thing first, we create a mind map. Basically, Logical Mind Map that produce stereotype of our idea about creative in MMU:

Then we started to scope our mind map. We choose Student’s Life as our main topic and we create another mind map. This time, we create Associate Mind Map. Since we really interested in creating a short film. We change every root with title that show every subject’s life:

Mr Radzi interested with our story and ask to write down our story. You can download it here to read it:

3 – Student MMU Creative (Story)

Here is synopsis of our story, for those who hate reading :P :

Story about boy name Karim; student in MMU influence by someone he knows to become well and worst. At the end, we see that, Karim change from bad to good person because of girl, name Siti. Unfortunately, Karim change just to achieve his goal; finish up his studies in MMU. Not to become a better man.

*

Finally, we start with our story line and process how we use metaphor to create our story:

and this is our outcome…enjoy:

This is the end of my articles, so, is there any comment and critique, don’t forget to leave it here…..! HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Random Word

The last lesson I learn from Mr Razi, is about Random Word. Random word is about how you generate a new idea. This is the greatest way of generate new idea as far as I know. Believe me… The best thing about this concept, it automatically provoke reaction from our brain to start thinking. Compare to mind map or brainstorm (in context of finding solution)

There are 3 step involve in this method that I discover. It’s all according to my understanding after attending class and reading a lecture notes:

*

1) Discover

First, in finding solution, write down anything that come in your mind when thinking about this problem. Anything!!!! Write down all and as much as you can. Dont forget write down your problem.

*

2) Finding Associate

Now, try to relate each random word that written down, to your problem.

*

3) Use associate to create new idea

Start apply random word and problem to find solution

*

*

Up to this point, I’m sure readers not understand about what I’m trying to say aite? :P Ok, here is an example and hopefully readers know how random word start to generate an idea:

*

*

Problems: How to train 3 students to become Creative Studies tutors in 6 months time

Random words: Monkey

*

From monkey, try to ellobrate things about monkey that we thought. Here is some idea that I already got:

  • Zoo
  • Banana
  • Tail

*

Start to associate 1st idea to problem by describe about zoo:

No animals like to be in captivity

*

In practice:

No student like to being push in class. So, dont strict in giving an assignment.

*

*

2nd idea, is about banana:

Monkey like to be rewarded with banana

*

In practice:

Reward students with something that value in order to motivate them to achieve desire target.

*

*

3rd idea, is about tail:

Monkey dosen’t like play with its tail

In practice:

Dont stress student with a lot of assignment. Always motivate student how to score for this subject.

*

*

So, that’s all about random word..hopefully you can understand and try to see a problem in different angle. Sometimes, if you are lucky enough, you can solve it right away…:p

Hang out with my friend at mamak. My friend, si bulat (bkn nama sebenar) start gossip-gossip. He also start making stupid joke. Usually, he is a quite person, but dunno, why he become hyperactive. Since we lepak at mamak 2-3 hours, we buy nuts (kacang cap tangan). Then, si bulat started to insult one of my friend, si king kong (bkn nama sebenar). Dunno how it begin, but si king kong very angry and he scold si bulat.

Suddenly Si bulat become silent. Maybe he started to realize that he is over limit. Si bulat say sorry to si king kong and he grab nuts and offer to si king kong:

si bulat: sorry…btw, u want some “easy”?

si king kong: huh?“easy”?

si bulat: yelaa..“easy” dlm bahasa melayu kan kacang?? (yeah, “easy” in malay language stand for nuts aite?)

We had a very hard laugh because of his stupid joke…..

Juxtaposition

In Juxtaposition, we learn about connection between graphic and description. There’s a lot thing I learn in this chapter. The best part is, using single image and create a metaphor using specific word. Here is “in class excercise”:

1) Create a passage/writing that describe Love

2) Create a passage/writing that describe the concept of Woman

Below is my “take home exercise”:

1) Create a passage/writing that describe the concept of  Love or Life

2) Create a passage/writing that describe the concept of  Love or Life

3) Create a passage/writing that describe the concept of  Pain

Mind Map

Base on Mr Halim’s class, mind map divide into 2 types:

  • Logical Mind Map – related to subject (center) – STEREOTYPE
  • Associated Mind Map – usually out of topic

In class exercise, we have to elaborate about Mortar & Pestle. The objective of this exercise, we need to use information on associated mind map and create a function of mortar & pestle. Here is the result from my own imagination:

  • Sun – use pestle as a cap, protect from sun
  • Smoke – pestle use as ash tray
  • Pain – mortar use as cosmetic surgery, hit it on patient face and pestle use to store blood

Novelty, Creativity, Innovation & Invention

Novelty
When someone come out with new idea and that idea appriciate by a group of person, it define as novelty. It remind me to something about discovering Internet. Specifically,  social networking. From my own discover, I found, Mark Elliot Zuckerberg (Facebook CEO) is very good example. He discover Facebook while studying in Harvard University on 2004.
The best thing about Facebook, from my point of view is, it can do more than just social networking. We can find friends, share anything with friends, start our own business, playing online games together, funding for non-profit organisation, blogging and so on. There is no limitation in Facebook. Mark Elliot Zuckerberg were receive award as one of The World’s Most Influential People in 2008 by TIME Magazine.
*

*
Creativity

Best define as, generate a new idea or new way of process. Everybody is creative. But not in the same field. For example, a painter and a blacksmith. There both are creative in processing an idea, but not in the same way.
Creativity is not original idea. It can be combination of other person ideas. For example, the invention of camera. It was found by Johann Zahn in 1685. Base on my research, the idea was combination of Ibn al-Haytham in his book about Optics and Robert Boyle, in his discover about pinhole.
In the next century, there were parmenent camera, that made by wood, built by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce from French. This is the first image that being photograph and process:
*
Innovation
Innovation usually related to create a new thing that usually for attract people to buy it. The idea usually will concertrate on customer need. There are 2 broad category in invention:
  • New invention that doesnt need change human routine. For example, shower tab, shoes, bag, cap and cloth.
  • New invention that revolutionary our daily routine. We need to practice using it before we be able to master it. For example, Internet, Online games, Drawing for digital images and so on.
*
Invention
Invention is a creative process in creating an idea base on pre-existing idea. It always related to problem solver. The idea come out maybe from drawing and writting. Brainstorming is a great way to invent something new.
Invention is conversion idea into cash. Usually invention need a money in creating new idea. For example, Nikola Tesla spent money to create his invention while Thomas Edison, the innovation sell his idea to get money.

What is Creative?

When speaking of creative thinking, I remember those persons who create fresh material and change people lifestyle in this century for example, internet. How this thing can affect world’s lifestyle. Right now, there is Blog , Facebook, and all stuff that effect way people socialize.

But creative thinking is not just about creating new things. The best way to describe Creative thinking is to think outside the box (in my own understanding). And the cool fact is, those intelligent person usually are not creative person.

On second lecture for this subject, I given task for interview my side classmate, and ask about his personal thing, the question I need to ask my partner are:

  • Full name
  • Hometown
  • Things that like
  • Things didn’t like
  • Unique about this person
  • Logo for this person

Then, after finished, I swap back the paper with partner. This is the answer I have had from my partner, Acap;

Full name: Afdhal Nidzam B Abd Raffar
Hometown: Born in Kuala Lumpur, currently stay in Terengganu
Things like: editing, photoshoot, chatting, singing
Things didn’t like: smokers, say something rude, bored lecturer
Unique about this person:
40% creative & intelligent
– 30% clumsy
– 5% cool
– 5% relax
– 5% friendly
– 5% passionate
And this is my logo:

So, what I can think from this activity was, this is perception from person that close to us. From logo he gave, this is the best thing describe about me. From this activity, I get to know my weakness from aspect unique by based on percentage above.

During this activity, when people swap and get their own paper, some of them laugh and smile, because they get to know their identity through other people. The fact is, humans when get compliment or insult in good ways, they will automatically respond in a good ways.

So, continue back about this creative, when I goggling about this creative, I founded a blog (http://www.virtualsalt.com/crebook2.htm) which told about procedure of brainstorming in produce creative idea:

What is Brainstorming?

Brainstorming is probably one of the most powerful to produce creative ideas. It is an idea generating technique. Its main goals are to break us out of our habit-bound thinking and to produce a set of ideas from which we can choose.

Practical Methodology

Someone must be put in charge of writing down all the ideas. Preferably, the ideas should be written on a board or butcher papered walls so that the whole brainstorming group can see them. In an ideal session, the recorder should be a non participant in the brainstorming session, since it’s hard to be thoughtful and creative and write down everything at the same time.

It is often useful to begin with a 10 minute warm-up session. Thinking about the imaginary problem loosens people up and puts them into a playful mood. Some imaginary problem topics might include these:

  • How to light a house with a single light bulb
  • How to improve your travel from home to work
  • Inventing a new game for the Olympics
  • How to improve institutional food without increasing its cost

Variations

Stop and Go. For stop and go brainstorming, ideas are generated for three to five minutes. Then the group is silent (and thinking) for three to five minutes. Then ideas are given out for another three to five. This pattern alternates for the entire session.

Sequencing. In this technique, the moderator goes in order from one member of the group to the next in turn or sequence. Each member gives whatever ideas he then has, and they are written down. If a member has no ideas, he just says, “Pass,” and the next member responds. This movement in turn or around the table continues throughout the session.

Is it me? myself? or I?

This is my blog, so I have to say something about myself. Sometimes it is hard to introduce yourself because you know yourself so well that you do not know where to start with. :)

Burbbb____by_nekuromanseru

My name is Afdhal Nidzam Bin Abd Raffar. I’m a guy and I was born in Kuala lumpur. I don’t have many memories of Kuala Lumpur, though. My family moved to Jeddah when I was two years old, and I grew up in different places; Sarawak, Kedah and currently in Terengganu because of my father’s job.

I am particularly interested in photographycomputingdigital art and writing. I’ve been introduce to Adobe Photoshop since I was 16 years old, but it was not very serious until I started study in MMU. I’ve been doing quite a bit of teaching. I really enjoy teaching about Adobe Photoshop to a captive audience, usually secondary school. As for computer, it’s been a favourite of mine since secondary school.

I am a photographer. I like taking pictures and this is my part time job. I build my company with my brother and I wanted to become influence by taking pictures. So, I learn a lot from internet and people’s experience. As far as I know, I found photography is frustrating and rewarding — but most of all, fun.

Other hobbies of mine include a small amount of sports such as rugby and I love travelling. My dream vacation is Egypt because I love history subject a lot! Egypt is one of historical place in the world.

More recently, I busy with my event (Sekolah@MMU Perdana Taiping) and of course! my study. Hopefully I still have a time to study and got an A+ for all subject in this trimester.Aminnn..

This is a brief introduction of me. If you are interested in knowing more, read my articles or take a look at my personal blog. Do not expect too much, and keep your sense of humour. Hahahaha..
